Early transfer to domestic airport for 7am flight to Puerto Ordaz . Once in Puerto Ordaz we transfer to charter plane for a 1 hour flight to Canaima National Park and land in the Pemón Indian Community of Kavak. On route we overfly the Auyan Tepuy, the massive 270-square-mile, flat-topped mountain from which summit plunges Angel Falls. After checking in the lodge we take a short hike along a nature trail to Kavac Canyon, a narrow gorge that leads to a secluded pool, where we enjoy a refreshing swim. Then hike through an easy scenic trail through the jungle to visit the 50 meter high Tewanarempa falls. Finally back to Kavak for diner and sleep in native-style typical churuata or thatch-roofed shelter.(B,L,D)
3
Transfer to Kamarata where our river trip begins. Traveling in an open canoe provides the perfect opportunity to observe the wild, tropical nature surrounding us, as well as some native settlements. Along the river we stop for beautiful hikes. The Estrechura or Perwa Rapids, which we encounter this afternoon, are the most spectacular of the route. Sleep in hammocks at camp Arenal. Enjoy superb panoramas of the Tepuys from camp.
River travel: 7 hours. (B,L,D).

River trip continues to the Carrao River up to the confluence with the Río Churún, then head up to the Devil´s Canyon – a spectacular gorge with soaring vertical walls. Our route follows the river that receives the waters of Angel Falls. Arrive to Ratoncito where our campsite awaits for us.
River travel: 2 hours. (B,L,D).
5
After breakfast, hike through tropical vegetation to reach the Laime lookout point of Angel Falls. We are rewarded with our first close-up view of Angel Falls, whose waters free-fall 979 through the air before crashing into the rocks below!. After time to admire and photograph this initial vista, we may continue hiking another 30 minutes to a hidden pool and take a dip at the base of the falls. Walk back to Ratoncito camp and night in hammocks.
Hiking: 2 ½ hours Round trip. (B,L,D).
6
Navigate back to the Río Carrao toward Canaima. We pass Orchid Island and observe the landscape changing to rolling hills and drier savannah with shorter trees. Hike to El Sapo Falls, 150 ft. water jump that has a cave you can walk behind the water curtain. Here, we are refreshed by the spray of the seven cascades, as we walk behind the waterfall. Later arrive to Canaima, located at a peaceful lagoon and surrounded by exotic cascades. Lunch and free afternoon to walk, relax and perhaps buy some local handcrafts.

Ben Rowswell –
